Jablonec Nad Nisou - Summer and Winter

Jablonec nad Nisou is a beautiful town built in a valley under the Jizera Mountains [Jablonec = place with apple trees; nad Nisou = along the Nisou River]. It is built along the side of a large dam (the northern-most intra-urban dam in Europe for all you dam fanatics!) which gives the town a real sense of space.
The town has a huge sports culture, and I was constantly told during the recent Winter Olympics that this or that athlete comes from Jablonec! I was also recently told that Cross-country skiing is not very popular in the Czech because it is so physically demanding, and that only the people from around Jablonec enjoy it.
